Ongoing lethal violence: definition

Ongoing lethal violence is when one or more persons carry out a violent attack in a public space, such as a school or other public place, with the intention of harming others. The likelihood of such an event occurring at the University is very low.

In the event of an attack

1. Flee

  • Leave the scene
  • Get to safety
  • Note emergency exits

2. Seek shelter

  • Seek out a safe place
  • Stay alert
  • Switch off the sound on your phone
  • Do not make unnecessary calls to people at risk

3. Raise the alarm

  • Call 112 as soon as you can
  • Tell them where you are, what has happened and about the perpetrator(s)

Also remember

  • Don't use your mobile phone unless you have to. If the network is overloaded, it can be difficult for vital calls to get through.
  • Follow the instructions of the police, emergency services and other authorities.
  • Do not share unconfirmed rumours online or in any other way.
  • When police arrive on the scene, it may be difficult for them to immediately determine who is the perpetrator and who is the victim, so do not hold anything in your hands.
  • Be prepared for further attacks to occur.

You can do your part by

  • Getting into the habit of noting evacuation routes and the location of emergency exits.
  • Not letting unauthorised persons into premises where access is restricted.
