Microsoft Copilot – AI-powered chat tool
Copilot is an AI-powered chat tool from Microsoft. The service is available to you as a student during your studies.
What you can do in Microsoft Copilot
- Chat with text, voice and image features
- Summarise documents and web pages
- Create AI-generated images
- Generate text
- Write code
How to log in to Microsoft Copilot
- Go to copilot.microsoft.com
- Click on "Sign in"
- Select "Sign in with a work or school account"
- Log in with "computer identity@mau.se" (e.g. kit01906@mau.se) + your password
Start with a clear prompt
A prompt is a request or command that you enter into Copilot to get a response back. By formulating a clear prompt, you can direct the AI's response and get relevant results based on your needs. Below are some suggestions for prompts you can use in Copilot.
- Literature search: "Find relevant articles, books or websites on [topic] that I can use in my research on [topic]."
- Summarising documents: "Create a short summary of this document that clearly describes its main content."
- Creating a presentation: "Generate a PowerPoint presentation on [topic] for [target audience] and include tips on [topic], and [topic]".
- Proofreading: "Check a text for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and other linguistic inconsistencies."
- IT support: "Provide step-by-step instructions to solve [common IT problems, e.g. network connection, email problems]."
Give Copilot access to documents
One advantage of using Copilot in the Microsoft Edge browser is that you can summarise a PDF file, for example. For this to work, you need to give Copilot access to your document.
- Go to Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click on the small gear at the bottom right of the open sidebar.
- Select "Go to all margin bar settings"
- Click on Copilot under "App and notification settings".
- Make sure that "Allow Copilot to read same-hangout tracks on the web" is ticked.
How to use Copilot for documents
- Right-click on your PDF document on your computer.
- Click on "Open with" and select Microsoft Edge.
- Click on Copilot in the sidebar.
Information security in Copilot
When you log in to Microsoft Copilot with your computer identity, you get an extra layer of security that means your searches are not stored at Microsoft.
Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
You have access to Microsoft Office for home use on your computer, phone or tablet. The software is available via 'Office365 Student Advantage', a free subscription service from Microsoft.
The following software is included in the service:
- Office 365 ProPlus for PC (Office 2016)
- Office 365 ProPlus for Mac (Office 2016)
- Office Mobile for iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch
- Office Mobile for Android
How to install Microsoft Office on your PC
- Go to http://portal.office.com
- Enter your 'computer identity'@mau.se. Example: ab1234@mau.se. The service will locate the server.
- Log on using your 'computer identity'@mau.se and password.
- Click 'Installera Office 2016' to start the download (or click 'Övriga installationer' for more download options).
For Mac
- The first time Microsoft Office is started, a login window is shown.
- Log in with your 'computer identity'@mau.se and password.
For Chromebook
- Unfortunately, it's not possible to install it on a Chromebook and the university's license doesn't apply to Microsoft online. You can find more information on Microsoft's website.
How to access Microsoft Office (microsoft.com)
You can install Office on a number of devices
Office365 Student Advantage includes licences for up to five different software installations. This includes Windows and Mac versions for desktops and laptops. You can also run Microsoft Office mobile for Android or Office Mobile for iPhone on up to five devices.
For example, if you install Microsoft Office on a desktop computer and then a laptop, you have used two of your five licences. If you want to uninstall an installation you can remove it from portal.office.com and use that licence on another device instead.
Duration of access to Microsoft Office
Your Office Professional Plus licence stops working when you are no longer a student at Malmö University. When you open a Microsoft Office application you will be notified that the software is no longer activated. If you wish to continue to use Microsoft Office, you will have to purchase a full license version.
Help with installing Office Professional Plus?
Due to the number of students using different platforms, the IT-Service is unable to help with installations. Microsoft has a number of support resources for installations available at office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/ and we recommend using those.
Skype for business/Lync
Skype for business requires a licence that is unavailable to students.
