Welcome to a two-day workshop on sustainable education

This hybrid two-day event focusses on integrating sustainability into teaching, research related to education, and community partnerships. We invite you to join us to share your experiences and learn from others as we develop a stronger network of faculty, staff, and students thinking about different aspects of sustainability.

This event is free and open to both teachers and students!

About the workshop

Why we are doing this: an opportunity to share what different faculty and universities are doing around sustainability in teaching and research. We are using a hybrid “hub” model with online and different physical locations that enable cross-site collaboration and widening participation while reducing travel time, costs and carbon emissions.

The workshop will take place over two days both online and in-person. Participants will be invited to attend online or in person at one of the hubs. Information and agenda for the Malmö University hub will be available at a later date.

The workshop series is organised by Kingston University, in partnership with UNC Charlotte, London Metropolitan University, Malmö University, and other universities.

Provisional programme

21 May, 15.00 – 18.00

Panels and papers discussing examples of sustainability efforts that connect to classrooms and/or community partners.

22 May, 15.00 – 18.00

The second day will focus on one or more “hackathons” that bring community sustainability issues into practice. Starting with a toolkit developed by Kingston University, teams (online) will collaborate to develop ideas and plans for addressing specific sustainability challenges, with time to present ideas. We hope this experience will show the value of a hackathon model for sustainability efforts and help refine the existing toolkit, which will also be shared with participants.

Abstract submission

We invite submissions for short papers and lightning talks. We encourage participants to submit individual or collaborative abstracts of up to 250 words for presentations that can be from 5 to 15 minutes. We will do our best to accommodate your preferred format, but this will depend on space available within the schedule, and we may contact you to discuss an alternative format. From these, we will invite colleagues to present around themes that emerge from submissions. We hope that all those submitting would be open to either a panel discussion or presentation format.

Short papers are likely to follow traditional conference presentation format, though we also welcome submissions offering opportunities for interaction. These should be limited to 15 minutes. Dedicated paper sessions, organised by theme, will be followed with time for questions and discussion.

Lightning talks should be limited to 5 minutes and no more than 5 slides (or equivalent). Lightning talks offer a fantastic opportunity to share new ideas, capture insights gained, generate hallway conversation, and receive helpful feedback.
