Starting in May, the former student union building will be demolished before construction of the new building Amphitrite will begin. If you spend time in Niagara or at the Student Centre, you can expect some disruption for the rest of the spring semester. Construction is planned to start in November.
The property company Wihlborgs will ensure that the new building is finished. Procurement of a contractor to carry out the work is currently underway. In collaboration with the City of Malmö, they will then assess how much of the area needs to be cordoned off during construction, so that the work can run smoothly and people can move between the buildings as the work is under way.
The cordon is planned to be set up at the beginning of May. Immediately after that, demolition will start, causing occasional disruption to staff and students in Niagara, Nereus/Student Centre and outside. Demolition will take place throughout the spring semester.
Some noise expected
The B1 and B2 audotoriums and the A part of Niagara building face the student union site and will be most affected by the noise. This also applies to most of Nereus.
"We have asked Wihlborgs to avoid disruption on certain days when we have international guests. Unfortunately, we will have to live with this for the rest of the semester. We hope that it will still be possible to move between the buildings and up to the quay once the cordon is up. Information will be posted on our website as soon as we know," says Nik Ajvazi, Head of Building and Estate Services.
Malmö University has recently signed a binding lease with Wihlborgs. The base rent for Amphitrite will be approximately SEK 69 million per year, with occupancy planned for early 2028.
"We are pleased to have come this far in the process and look forward to following the construction and development of our sustainable and creative campus. Amphitrite will be an important place for students, employees and the Faculty of Odontology," says Vice-Chancellor Mia Rönnmar.
A sustainable building
Wihlborgs' is aiming to build Amphitrite with environmental certification in mind, making it sustainable in terms of environmental impact and energy, and ensuring a healthy indoor environment.
"Parts of the existing building will be preserved and recycled building materials will be transformed into a new façade material. Recycling is a very important piece of the puzzle for the building to live up to the high environmental demands for this project," says sustainability developer Anna Bruun Månsson.
Amphitrite
Amphitrite will house the Faculty of Odontology, the student centre and the student unions. The ground floor will house a reception, service centre, study areas, café and a large classroom, while the other floors will include learning environments, workplaces, student unions and the Faculty of Odontology, including the University Dental Service.
