Welcome to join MaU Reads
MaU Reads is a book club for students at Malmö University. This autumn, we will read The memory theater by Swedish fantasy author Karin Tidbeck. The book club will be held in English.
About the book and the author
In The memory theater, a parallel world exists a mystical realm known only as the Gardens. It's a place where feasts never end, games of croquette have devastating consequences, and teenagers are punished for growing up. For a select group of Masters, it’s a decadent paradise where time stands still. For those who serve them, however, it’s a slow torture where their lives can be ended in the blink of an eye. In a bid to escape before their youth betrays them, Dora and Thistle — best friends and confidants — set out on a remarkable journey through time and space. Travelling between their world and ours, they hunt the one person who can grant them freedom. Along the way they encounter a mysterious traveller who trades in favours and never forgets debts, a crossroads at the center of the universe, our own world on the brink of war, and a travelling troupe of actors with the ability to unlock the fabric of reality.
Karin Tidbeck (born 1977) is from Stockholm but now lives in Malmö, where they work as a freelance writer, translator and teacher of creative writing. Tidbeck's own writing is mainly in the genres of fantasy and science fiction, and they write both short stories and novels, both in Swedish and in English. Their debut in the English-speaking world came in 2012 with the short story collection Jagannath, which was nominated for and won several major awards.
