Leave from studies

Taking leave from studies means that you take a break in your studies with the intention of resuming them later on. In certain cases, leave from studies can be granted alongside the right to continue on a specified date. This is referred to as ‘leave from studies with a place guarantee’ and is only possible if you demonstrate a specific reason. Specific reasons for leave from your studies may be social, medical or other special circumstances, such as childcare, military service or student union duties. These special reasons must be substantiated with supporting documentation.

Application decision

Applications for leave from studies are processed on an ongoing basis. You will be contacted when your application has been processed. If you are not granted leave from studies with a place guarantee, you may resume your studies only if and when there is space available on the course or programme.

Withdrawal from studies

If you decide to withdraw from a programme or course that you have started, you must submit a notification of withdrawal. You may return to your studies at a later date depending on available space. If you plan to resume your studies in the future, applying for leave from studies is often a better option.

The applications for withdrawal are processed on an ongoing basis. You will be contacted when your application has been processed.

Early withdrawal from a course

You can exercise what is called 'early withdrawal' during the first 21 days of a self-contained course, meaning a course that is not given as part of a programme. If you decide to withdraw from your studies early, it is possible to apply and be admitted to the same course again through universityadmissions.se. Early withdrawal is not possible if you have already completed any exams or assignments as part of the course.

Deferment of studies

If you cannot start your course or programme in the semester for which you have been admitted, you could be entitled to defer your studies, if there are specific reasons. Applications for deferment are processed on an ongoing basis. You will be contacted when your application has been processed.

Please note: fee-paying students must pay their tuition fee by the payment deadline in order to be eligible for a deferment.

Declining an admissions offer

If you have received an admissions offer, but decide not to begin your studies, you can decline your offer at universityadmissions.se. If you have already registered for your studies, or if it is no longer possible to decline your offer on universityadmissions.se, you should contact the Student Administration.

Once you have declined an offer, you will lose your study place permanently as it will be made available to other applicants. If you decline the offer within the first three weeks of the semester, it is possible to apply to the same course or programme in the future.

Sick leave during studies

If you receive student financial aid from CSN and become ill to the extent that you are unable to study at all, you should contact the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
