Become a support person
As a mentor or note-taker for a student with a disability, you play a very important role. You support a student for them to succeed in their studies, while learning a lot yourself.
Being a mentor
Your role as a mentor will be adapted depending on the student’s difficulties. This often involves helping in planning and structuring studies, reviewing assignments and discussing what is expected of the student in their studies. Mentoring involves an average of two hours per week. This includes meetings with the student, preparation time and workshops.
Apply to become a mentor
Register your interest by completing the form below. The mentoring coordinator will contact you to arrange an interview and information meeting as soon as more mentors are needed.
Do you have questions?
mentorsamordnare@mau.seBeing a note-taker
Being a note-taker means allowing a student with study support to access the notes that you take during scheduled teaching time, such as lectures, seminars or workshops. You take notes as usual, but the notes must of course be readable by others than yourself.
How to become a note-taker
Many students with study support recruit a note-taker on their own by asking their fellow students. Once you have been approached by one or more students who want to access your notes, register by filling in the form. It is first when you receive an e-mail confirming your registration that your assignment as a note-taker starts.
Get in touch on Canvas
The teacher of your course can add a note-taking support module on Canvas. In this module, you can enter your contact details if you want to become a note-taker, so that students with study support in your course can get in touch with you. Instructions for how the teacher creates the module can be found on the intranet.

Prepare for lectures
It is beneficial for both the student providing and the student receiving note-taking support to be well prepared for lectures. You can do this by, for example, familiarising yourself with the content of the course books:
- Skim through the material – study the headings, subheadings, italicised text, images, structures and diagrams, and look at the introduction and conclusion.
- Make short summaries.
- Form an understanding of the concepts, principles and methods that appear.
This will make it easier to take notes on what is essential, and you will learn more during the lecture. Note that you are not doing any extra work since the course material has to be learned anyway. You save time by preparing for the lectures.
The note format
The notes provided by the note-taking support are intended to replace the student's own notes, but students receiving support can of course also take their own notes and use the support notes as a supplement.
The notes should have a wide margin and space between the lines. This allows the person you are taking notes for to supplement the notes with their own thoughts or questions.
- Try to create a clear structure in the notes by adding headings, subheadings and grouping the material.
- Bear in mind that the teacher sometimes says important things that are not written on the board. Try to pick up on these clues and make brief notes.
- Also remember to write down terms and concepts that are repeated by the teacher and that are specific to the course.
- Sometimes it can be helpful to use different colours to clarify context and structure.
After the lecture
The notes are handed in and copied if necessary after the lecture. Sometimes, you may want to keep the notes to transcribe and complete them before handing them in. Others prefer to type them into a computer before they are finished. If so, try to do this as quickly as possible.
You will get paid for your work
As a note-taker, you receive a semester compensation based on how much of the semester you have been active as a note-taker.
